While many hearing devices are rechargeable, the majority use batteries of varying sizes. It is important to know the size of battery your device needs and to have a fresh supply on hand. Below you will find some of the simple instructions for using, storing and disposing of batteries. Follow these to help your hearing devices stay in top shape for years to come.
Types of Hearing Aid Batteries
Here are the batteries used in hearing aids by size and color code:
- Size 10 yellow is the smallest overall diameter
- Size 312 brown
- Size 13 orange
- Size 675 blue is the largest overall diameter
Tips for Maintaining Hearing Aid Batteries
Be sure to fresh batteries in sealed packages and always dispose of used batteries properly. Each battery comes with a protective seal. Remove this before using and follow any other instructions included with the packaging.
When not wearing your hearing aid, turn it off and open the battery door. Keep the door open when not in use overnight. This allows any condensation that has built up throughout the day to air out and dry before your next use. If you store your hearing aid for an extended period of time, take the battery out completely. You can store it in the protective case for your hearing aids.
Avoid storing batteries and hearing aids in extreme temperatures because this can drain battery power and shorten the lifespan. This means storing them in a dry and cool area that is away from the sun, exposure to the extreme cold and any possible moisture. Remove dead batteries from your hearing aids as soon as possible. Wait up to a minute before inserting an air-activated battery after peeling the protective coating.
